Westbound I-64 at the Daniel Boone Bridge over the Missouri River will be closed beginning at 6 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 25 to reopen by 9 p.m. that evening.

Westbound I-64 at the Daniel Boone Bridge will be closed starting at around 6 a.m. on Sunday.

The Missouri Department of Transportation is encouraging motorists to use I-270 to I-70, or Route 364 to Route 94. People returning to St. Louis from St. Charles County will be able to use eastbound I-64.

Mark Croarkin  is the St. Louis bridge engineer for MoDOT. He says the Boone Bridge over the Missouri River will be closed for a routine inspection.

“We inspect every bridge in Missouri at least every two years,” said Croarkin. “This bridge we’ve been looking at every year, it’s a little bit older than some and it has an awful lot of important areas. We’re not expecting to find anything significant, but we will be putting our hands on every connection plate in the truss.”

Croarkin says there is no good way to inspect the bridge without closing it completely.

“We’re going to have people in lift trucks looking at all the connections at the top. When they’re 70 feet in the air and the truck takes up two lanes, there’s just not enough room for traffic to be going by.”

Crews will reopen the bridge at around 9 p.m on Sunday night.
