New Sheldon exhibitions explore 'Darkness,' 'Shade' and artists' progeny

This article first appeared in the St. Louis Beacon, Feb. 16, 2012 - Get seven openings for the price of one -- although all are free -- at the Sheldon Friday night.

In its Bellwether gallery, the Sheldon presents "Liquid Terrain: 20 Years of Works on Paper by Eva Lundsager," exploring the worlds between landscape and abstraction. In the gallery of photography, "Edge of Darkness: Photographs by Steve Giovinco and Tim Simmons" examines the very moment at which light disappears.

"The Beat Goes On: Instruments from the Hartenberger World Music Collection," in the history of jazz gallery, exhibits a collection ranging from drums of Africa to jazz instruments played by Clark Terry and Artie Shaw. The Bernoudy gallery of architecture displays "Made in the Shade: Paul Rudolph's Florida Houses Revisited," models and drawings of the Washington University architect's mid-century projects.

The Nancy Spirtas Kranzberg gallery debuts the work of a St. Louis-based photographer in "Northern Haiti: Human Landscape-Photographs by Patti Gabriel."

And an exhibition in the gallery of children's art explores the implications of being born of an artistic parent. "Art by the Children of Artists" displays the work of young artists whose parents are active in the local arts community.
