Rap Tribute To ‘March Madness’ Billikens Created By Chaminade Coach

(Saint Louis Athletics)
The Saint Louis University Men's Basketball Billikens following their win over New Mexico State in the NCAA tournament.

Jason Kertz is a 2009 graduate of Saint Louis University.  He is now a middle school teacher as well as baseball and basketball coach at Chaminade College Prep.

A song he posted earlier this week on YouTube already has several thousand views.  The song, “Started from the Bottom (Bills on Top),” is a cover of singer Mike Posner’s cover of rapper Drake’s song, “Started from the Bottom.”

Earlier this month, Saint Louis University’s Men’s Basketball team was crowned champions of the Atlantic 10 Conference’s regular season. They also won the A-10 Conference tournament.

Now, during March Madness, the Billikens won their first game of the NCAA tournament, beating New Mexico State University, 64-44.

SLU plays again Saturday and if they win will reach the Sweet Sixteen for the first time since 1957.

Host Steve Potter spoke with Kertz about how he came to write and record the song in just a few days, how he thought it was important to honor former SLU coach Rick Majerus, who passed away in December 2012, and the reaction of his students.
