Arts Note: Metro Theater names new artistic director

This article first appeared in the St. Louis Beacon, Oct. 21, 2013 - St. Louis’ Metro Theater company has chosen a new artistic director to succeed Carol North, who’s leaving Metro after 36 years. Julia Flood, longtime artistic director of Eckerd Theater in Clearwater, Fla., will head up the local children’s theater company beginning this February.

Flood was chosen from among 40 applicants from across the country. She spent 16 years at Eckerd, a small professional company presenting work for children and families in Florida and in touring shows across the country. A classically trained actor, Flood also brings writing, directing and producing skills to Metro Theater.

North is very pleased with Flood’s selection, she said in a news release.

"Julia is a gifted artist, a genuine collaborator, a passionate advocate for young people, and a sheer delight personally,” North said. “

It's a privilege to pass the mantle of leadership to her."

For Flood, the move is an honor that also offers a chance to experience a booming arts community.

"I have respected and admired Carol North and the company's work for more than a decade, Flood said, in the release. “I am excited to explore the vibrant artistic landscape of St. Louis and look forward to working with the company's many community partners as Metro Theater Company begins this new chapter."
