For more than thirty years, St. Louis nativeBryan Haynes made his living primarily doing commercial art. But when he moved back to Missouri, he began to paint landscape scenes based on the geography and history of the region.
"Seeing it anew, I just started to paint landscapes purely for the joy of it," said Haynes. "But then those shapes in the landscape..began to describe the narrative within the paintings."
Haynes classifies his work as a modern continuation of the Regionalism style made famous by another Missourian, Thomas Hart Benton. He calls it New Regionalism, and it is the subject of a new book featuring his artwork, New Regionalism: The Art of Bryan Haynes.
In addition to the 200 paintings showcased in the book, Haynes' work includes murals at the Arch and the Missouri Botanical Garden. An exhibit currently on display at the Old Courthouse Rotunda features another 42 of his paintings.
