Bond Will Have Say in Highway Bill

By AP/KWMU

Washington, DC – Missouri's senior Senator is moving into a key committee chairmanship that will give him control over next year's multi-billion dollar federal highway bill.

Kit Bond will head a transportation sub- committee that plays a starring role in writing the highway bill, a process that generally happens once every six years.

He'll head the Transportation sub-sommittee of the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee.

Bond must give up a chance to chair the Small Business and Entrepreneurship Committee, a position he held from 1995 until Democrats took the majority last year. The Senate has rules governing the number of committees and sub-committees a senator may chair.

Bond will remain chairman of the spending panel on housing and veterans' affairs, which is part of the Senate Appropriations Committee.
