Lawyer Cueto's License Debated

Springfield, IL – A Belleville attorney convicted of obstructing justice is fighting the state to keep his law license.

Amiel Cueto's attorney and lawyers for the state Attorney Registration and Disciplinary Commission battled yesterday before the commission's hearing board.

Cueto was convicted in 1997 with interfering with a federal investigation into Thomas Venezia's $48 million gambling empire.

He's serving a seven-year sentence at a federal penitentiary in Marion, Ill. The Illinois Supreme Court suspended his law license indefinitely in 1998.

Lawyers for the ARDC argue he should be disbarred because of his federal conviction. But Cueto's lawyer says the commission shouldn't have given confidential records to federal investigators.
