Imprisoned Cueto Given More Time to Form Defense

Belleville, ILL. – A Belleville attorney convicted of obstruction of justice in a federal gambling investigation has until July to detail why he should get to keep his law license.

Amiel Cueto is in federal prison after being convicted of conspiracy and obstructing an investigation of gambling in southern Illinois. He's been fighting to keep his license for five years.

Most recently, Cueto cited a lack of research materials and a typist in asking for more time to respond to a state hearing panel's decision that he should lose his license. He now has until July 11 to submit a brief outlining his arguments. And a review panel may hear oral arguments in September.

The 53-year-old Democrat is scheduled to be released to a halfway house in July.
