Justin Rigali Now a Cardinal

(KWMU photo)

Vatican City – Former St. Louis archbishop Justin Rigali is now Cardinal Rigali. Pope John Paul II installed 31 new cardinals Tuesday in the Vatican. Rigali was the only American among them. He was a long-time Vatican aide before coming to St. Louis nine and a half years ago.

Rigali left to become Philadelphia's Archbishop earlier this month. He says "I never dreamed I would be standing here today." Rigali adds he's honored to have been chosen by the pope.

The 68-year-old Rigali has been a priest for 40 years. Asked if he would like to see an American chosen to eventually replace the ailing Pope John Paul, Rigali replied, "you have to judge according to your conscience."
