Nixon Says Ruling Could Mean Early Release for Cons

Jefferson City, Mo. – Missouri Attorney General Jay Nixon says a state Supreme Court ruling Tuesday means about 5,800 convicts could be eligible for early release from prison.

The court says an early release provision in a law passed last year applies to prisoners sentenced before and after the law's effective date.

Nixon opposed the bill when it went through the Legislature.

Now he says some inmates could ask to be paroled after serving as few as 120 days - in some cases well before scheduled parole dates.

The court challenge deals only with one section of the law. But Nixon says the retroactive interpretation could lead to similar claims for other sections.
