Springfield, Ill. –

The Republican and Democratic candidates for U.S. Senate in Illinois met in Springfield Tuesday night.

It was the first of three debates between Alan Keyes and Barack Obama. The candidates differed on most issues that came up, but they did so in a generally polite fashion.

Illinois Public Radio's Bill Wheelhouse prepared this report.
