By AP/KWMU

Earth City, Mo. – A man who walked into a plant in St. Louis County and started shooting surrendered to police Thursday night.

Everyone else was evacuated while police isolated the gunman, who kept police at bay for hours.

Police aren't yet releasing the man's name, but say he gave up without incident sometime after 10:00 p.m. He is also a former employee at the plant and had been on the phone with a police negotiator for a few hours prior to his surrender.

Witnesses heard more than a dozen shots after the shooting began at 3:00 at Beltservice Corporation in Earth City. He has been releaesd from a hospital.

At one point, the shooter left to go outside and reload his weapon. Police cordoned off several blocks around the plant.

The company employs 150 people. Company co-founder and chairman Dick Engelsmann says 110 employees were in the building at the time of the shooting.
