Edwardsville, Ill. – A Catholic priest will not face criminal charges for taking $226,000 from a church in Edwardsville, Ill.
A special prosecutor says the bishop of the Diocese of Springfield, Ill. wasn't interested in filing charges again the Reverend Gerald Bunse.
Bunse resigned in January from St. Mary's Catholic Church and sought treatment for gambling. He says he plans to repay the debt.
Bunse has been reassigned to a church in Jacksonville, Illinois.
Springfield Diocese spokeswoman Kathie Sass says diocesan officials are pleased with the prosecutor's decision. She says legal action would've cost Bunse and the diocese money.
