ESL Committeemen Appear Before Grand Jury

East St. Louis, Ill. – Nine Democratic precinct committeemen in East St. Louis appeared before a federal grand jury Thursday to answer questions about money they received for the November Second election.

The matter was not open to the public. Subpoenas issued Tuesday asked committeemen to produce records including budgets, receipts, checks, deposit slips and bank statements.

Most committeemen declined to comment after testifying, as did federal prosecutors, who say it's illegal for them to discuss pending matters. Committeeman Alvin Parks, Jr. says federal agents tried to serve him a subpoena at his house Wednesday, but he wasn't home.
