St. Louis, MO – There was a memorial service last night for long-time KWMU host Mike Sampson, who died last week at the age of 53.

A few hundred people packed the Christ Church Cathedral in downtown St. Louis.

Mike's best friend Wayne Bryan flew in from Arizona to speak at the service: "No one has ever undertaken a campaign - a deliberate action - to become a better person and a finer human being - as a goal, as a battle he was raging - than Michael Sampson."

The service also featured performances by the Gateway Men's Chorus and violinist David Halen, of the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra.

Sampson hosted KWMU's "St. Louis on the Air" and "Cityscape." He also worked for KTVI (Channel 2) when he first moved to St. Louis in the '80s.

The service Wednesday night included:

- A homily from the Rev. Brooke Myers (who was also close friends with Mike)

-Rememberances from KWMU General Manager Patty Wente and two of Mike's friends, Jeff Wunrow and Wayne Bryan.
