New York, NY – Former Cardinals slugger Mark McGwire is denying allegations of steroid use.

A new book by Jose Canseco claims the two injected each other with steroids when they both played for Oakland. The two were known then as the "Bash Brothers."

The book also claims a reporter's discovery of androstenedione in McGwire's locker in 1998 was no accident. Canseco says McGwire put it there to be seen to mask his steroid use.

But McGwire told the New York Daily News he did not use steroids and is saddened by the allegations.

Cardinals' manager Tony LaRussa - who managed the two in Oakland - is siding with McGwire.

The book is set to be released February 21.
