BRAC votes to start Wednesday

By AP/KWMU

Washington, DC – Officials in Missouri and Illinois are bracing for a final vote this week on Pentagon plans to close or realign military operations.

The proposed cuts include 3,600 military and civilian jobs in Missouri.

The Base Realignment and Closure Commission will start debating and voting tomorrow on the fates of all military installations.

Much of the focus in the St. Louis region has been on plans to close the National Guard's 131st Fighter Wing at Lambert Airport.

Supporters also want to save about 2,000 human resources jobs in Overland and 900 financial and accounting jobs in Kansas City and St. Louis.

In past years, the commission has left about 85% of the Pentagon's initial recommendations intact.
