Lab design conference being held this week in St. Louis

By Julie Bierach, KWMU

SAINT LOUIS, MO – Scientists in the bio-technology field are gathering in St. Louis this week to discuss the newest innovations in lab construction and design.

The Laboratory Design conference is being held by R&D magazine. One of the workshops will focus on how St. Louis has become the hub for bio-technology research. Julie Higginbotham, editor of the Lab Design Newsletter for R&D Magazine, says another major topic will be the science of green laboratory design.

"St. Louis fortunately has a firm that's one of the leaders world-wide in the science of green design, Helmuth Obata and Kassabaum and Bill Odell is going to be our key note speaker. So, we're excited to have him pass along some of the latest information to our attendees," said Higginbotham.

Higginbotham says an example of a "green" lab design in St. Louis is the Donald Danforth Plant Science Center.

Other topics that will be discussed are; the engineering of laboratory buildings, aspects of chemical management in labs and trends in sustainability, making labs more energy efficient.
