Police officer dragged by car; suspect still being sought

By AP/KWMU

Fairview Heights, Ill. – The search continues for a Belleville, Ill., man accused of dragging a police officer about 70 feet.

Prosecutors have charged Sidney Byas, Jr., 23, with attempted first-degree murder, aggravated battery and unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon. His bail is set at $200,000.

Authorities say a Fairview Heights police officer pulled Byas over early Saturday for driving without his headlights. Byas then reportedly drove off as the officer was reaching for a revolver in the back seat.

After being dragged, the officer managed to push himself from the car, which ran over his foot.

Byas' 22-year-old passenger was taken into custody at the scene and charged with obstruction of justice after giving a false statement.
