Community leaders urge support for East St. Louis' only full-scale hospital

By AP/KWMU

East St. Louis, Ill. – Officials in East St. Louis are trying to rally support for the city's only full-scale hospital.

The Southern Illinois Healthcare Foundation wants to merge some services at Kenneth Hall Regional Hospital with another hospital it owns in Centreville.

About 250 people turned out Sunday for a demonstration at Kenneth Hall. They called on officials to turn down the merger request when a state panel takes up the matter next week.

The foundation says Kenneth Hall is losing $3 million a year.

Organizers of Sunday's rally called on pastors to urge people to take part in a bus trip to Springfield next Monday for the hearing.
