St. Louis – Cardinals outfielder Rick Ankiel was carted off the field on a back board Monday night after he slammed headfirst into the fence following a running catch.

Ankiel chased down a long drive from the Phillies' Pedro Feliz in the eighth inning but couldn't stop himself from hitting the padded center-field wall. He was taken off the field with his head and neck immobilized, but was never unconscious.

The Cardinals said Ankiel underwent X-rays and a CT scan of his head, neck and back, and doctors found no fractures.

A team official says the outfielder checked out as QUOTE "neurologically intact."

The Cardinals lost the game to the Phillies 6-1.
