St. Louis, MO – Former state Senator Jeff Smith has been released from federal prison into the supervision of a local half-way house.

The Democrat, who represented the western half of St. Louis, served about two-thirds of his 366-day sentence. He reported to prison on January 5th. The conditions of Smith's parole, or how long he must remain at the halfway house are still undetermined, though he will be allowed to work.

Smith pleaded guilty last August to two counts of obstruction of justice for lying about his role in an illegal negative mailer against Russ Carnahan in 2004. In addition to the prison sentence, he also paid a $50,000 fine.
