Former Alton band director gets 6 years for sex with student, 16

By AP/St. Louis Public Radio

Alton, Ill. – A former Alton high school band director will spend six years in prison after admitting he had inappropriate sexual contact with a 16-year-old student.

Matthew Lang was sentenced Tuesday in Madison County. Seven months ago he pleaded guilty to one count of criminal sexual assault involving consensual
sex.

As part of a plea deal, prosecutors plan to drop three other counts. Prosecutors had sought a 15-year sentence.

A prosecutor revealed in court that the student's parents suspected inappropriate contact between their daughter and Lang.

The girl later admitted the affair and made an audio recording that investigators used to implicate Lang.

He was charged a year ago and resigned two months later.
