15 Mo. homeless shelters to split $1.2M

By AP/St. Louis Public Radio

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – Fifteen Missouri homeless shelters are splitting nearly $1.2 million to help families with children.

The state Department of Social Services is awarding the money to the shelters. The funds are part of the federal stimulus package.

The shelters must use the money to assist families with at least one child. The benefits cannot continue for more than four months.

Gov. Jay Nixon announced Tuesday that the additional money would be available. He says it will help families with children to get through short-term economic difficulties.

The money is going to shelters in Columbia, Kansas City, St. Louis, St. Joseph, Springfield, St. Louis County and St. Charles County.
