Slay, Sierra Club on opposing sides in 5th District state Senate contest

This article firt appeared in the St. Louis Beacon, July 23, 2012 - St. Louis Mayor Francis Slay is following through, with money and mailers, on his announcement last spring that he was supporting state Rep. Jamilah Nasheed in her bid to unseat state Sen. Robin Wright-Jones, D-St. Louis.

The Missouri Ethics Commission reported over the weekend that Slay had given $5,001 to Nasheed’s campaign – just enough for his donation to show up on the commission’s “over-$5,000” list, as a possible message to other Democrats.

Slay and Circuit Attorney Jennifer Joyce also are featured in a pro-Nasheed mailer being sent to potential voters throughout the 5th District.

Meanwhile, the third major Democrat in the race -- state Rep. Jeanette Mott Oxford – released today a list of her backers, the latest being Sunday’s endorsement by the Missouri chapter of the Sierra Club.

Oxford and Nasheed each claim a sizable chunk of support within the St. Louis Board of Alderman and the Missouri General Assembly.

Wright-Jones, meanwhile, has seen most of her old supporters defect to one or both of her rivals.

The latest, incomplete list (excluding aldermen and legislators), for both candidates include:

Oxford

AFSCME Council 72

Missouri NEA

Young Democrats of St. Louis

Gay and Lesbian Victory Fund, PROMO PAC

NARAL Pro-Choice Missouri, Planned Parenthood Votes-St. Louis

Communications Workers (CWA) Local 6355 (the State Workers Union)

Nasheed

Former St. Louis Mayor Freeman Bosley Jr.

St. Louis Circuit Clerk Jane Schweitzer

Collector of Revenue Gregg F.X. Daly
