Jefferson City, MO – Missouri House Democratic Leader Mark Abel says he will run for state treasurer next year.

Abel's announcement comes just two days after state utility regulator Kelvin Simmons said he will not run for the office.

Abel says the Treasurer's office would be a good place for him to continue working on some of the issues he championed in the house.

"Helping people have access to higher education has always been important to me," Abel said. "The other part is job creation [and] economic development."

Abel says he'll step down from his House leadership job in mid-November but will remain a member of the Legislature.

Arnold Mayor Mark Powell has also entered the race last month. At least four Republicans are also running.
