Shimkus Returns from Iraq Trip

St. Louis – Illinois Republican Congressman John Shimkus says Iraq faces many challenges in rebuilding its government and infrastructure. Shimkus returned this week from a Congressional trip to the country.
The Collinsville Congressman says crops are growing and children are returning to school, but to become stable, Iraq still must deal with Baath Party loyalists, terrorists, and common criminals.
"Great strides have been made," Shimkus said. "Does that mean it's still not a dangerous place? Yes, it's still dangerous. There are people who do not want to see democracy brought to Iraq."
Shimkus says a decrepit power plant he visited is an example of the need for major infrastructure investment.
He supports President Bush's request for $87 billion in reconstruction funds.
