St. Louis, MO – Some St. Louis public school students also walked out of classes in support of the workers and held demonstrations at three high schools and outside district headquarters.
St. Louis Public Schools spokeswoman Karen Hylton says all 94 schools were open, but problems linger at some:
"For example, at Sumner High School, we had a problem with the hot water not being there and low pressure in terms of the water system," Hylton said.
A total of seven schools were without hot water Tuesday because the maintenance engineers weren't there to light the boilers. As a result, students were served cold lunches.
A spokesman for the union representing the maintenance workers says the union did not organize the protest. Missouri law prohibits public employees from striking or other job actions.
