County Council Picks Temporary Executive

By AP/KWMU

Clayton, MO – The St. Louis County Council Tuesday night unanimously picked Democrat Charlie Dooley to take over as County Executive until Buzz Westfall returns.

Westfall is still hospitalized, in serious condition, with a staph infection that developed after he sought treatment for chronic back pain. He's been out of the office almost two weeks.

Westfall's Chief of Staff Jim Baker is overseeing most county government operations.

Council Chairman Greg Quinn had been the acting executive since Friday. Under the county charter, though, the Republican Quinn had to replaced because Westfall is a Democrat.

Dooley is a councilman from District 1, which means he represents part of north St. Louis County.
