Four of 10 Iraqi Freedom Deaths Are Rural Americans

By AP/KWMU

Washington, D.C. – Congressman Ike Skelton says our of every ten American military service members killed in Iraq and Afghanistan
came from small towns and rural places.

The Missouri Democrat says he's proud of rural and small-town young men and women, who are stepping up to the plate to defend the country.

As the senior Democrat on the House Armed Services Committee, Skelton had his staff analyze casualty reports from the Defense
Department.

He found that more than 43 percent of troops killed in Iraq came from towns with fewer than 20,000 residents. More than 46
percent of troops killed in Afghanistan came from such towns.

Skelton's Fourth District includes Fort Leonard Wood and Whiteman Air Force Base.
