St. Louis, MO – The debate next October 8 will be Washington University's third since 1992.

Chancellor Mark Wrighton says the fact that the university has been selected so many times attests to its ability to provide an objective forum for controversial issues:

"One of the things that's especially rewarding about St. Louis and Washington University is that this has proven to be a community that can conduct collegial and spirited debate and yet remain respectful of each other," said Wrighton.

As many as 100,000 people are expected to watch the nationally televised debate. Corporate sponsors will spend about $750,000 on the event. Wrighton says Washington University expects to invest at least that same amount.
