IL Police Depts. Will Be Linked via Internet

By AP/KWMU

Chicago, IL – Police departments across Illinois will soon be linked through a new Internet-based system.

The state announced the I-CLEAR system Wednesday; it will replace an existing database that only provides basic information, like outstanding warrants.

I-CLEAR can track patterns of activity, like cars that turn up suspiciously parked near nuclear power plants. It also offers a person's complete arrest history and also includes traffic stops that did not result in an arrest.

The program is expected to be fully online in three years at a start-up cost of $2.5 million dollars. It's based on a program that the Chicago Police Department has used for the past three years.
