Missouri House Approves Gay Marriage Amendment

Jefferson City, Mo. – The Missouri House gave tentative approval Wednesday to adding a ban on gay marriage to the state Constitution.

The measure spells out that only the marriage of a man and a woman can be recognized.

A similar plan cleared the Senate earlier.

Any version would need approval at a state-wide election.

Supporters say the change is needed to prevent the courts from overturning the state law that recognizes only marriage between a man and a woman.

Opponents say the constitutional change is redundant and discriminatory.
