River Locks & Dams Plan Nearing End of Public Comment

By Shawn Johnson, IL Public Radio

Springfield, Ill. –

This is the last week people can comment on proposed changes to the Midwest's major waterways.

The Army Corps of Engineers wants to expand five locks on the Mississippi River and two more on the Illinois.

It will hold its final two public hearings Monday and Tuesday, in western and central Illinois.

The goal is to make shipping goods by barge more efficient.

The plan has been debated and studied for more than a decade, often held up because of a split between industry groups and environmental groups.

Illinois Public Radio's Shawn Johnson reports on why the two sides still aren't seeing eye-to-eye.
