Illinois GOP Considers 13 Candidates

By AP/KWMU

Chicago – Thirteen people made their cases Tuesday to Illinois Republican leaders about why they would be the best choice to replace Jack Ryan on the GOP ballot this fall.

One hopeful wears a white wig and lives in his car that he calls "Air Ford One." Three got interviewed just by showing up. One isn't even a Republican.

The Republicans are trying to find a replacement for Ryan, who abandoned his Senate campaign over embarrassing sex club allegations.

Party leaders have repeatedly tried and failed to reel in a big-name candidate. Former governors, state senators, even Chicago Bears great Mike Ditka have all said no.

Whoever is the new candidate has less three months to raise cash and campaign against Democratic powerhouse Barack Obama.
