Springfield, Ill. – More Illinoisans have been requesting extensions to file federal tax returns. The IRS says about 262,000 extensions were sought this year.
That's about 8,000 more than two years ago.
Those who requested extensions have until August 16th to submit their returns, though people can also request a second extension.
Internal Revenue Service spokeswoman Sue Hales says a first extention request is usually granted automatically, but the second request is not as easy to obtain.
People granted a second extention have until October 15th to file their 2003 tax return.
