Missouri Democrats Sue Blunt over Election Law

By Matt Sepic, KWMU

St. Louis – Missouri Democrats say Republican Secretary of State Matt Blunt violated a federal elections law.

The party has filed a federal suit. The plaintiffs are three Kansas City-area voters.

Democrats say the people got provisional ballots last week when election judges couldn't find their names on voter lists.

But party spokesman Jim Gardner says the ballots were never counted.

"The method in which Secretary Blunt has been applying Missouri's provisional voting law quite simply put, is in violation of the federal Help America Vote Act," Gardner said.

But Blunt spokesman Spence Jackson says the suit is frivolous.

"It's just curious that they decide to file this lawsuit this close into the election," Jackson said. "And I think there are probably other motives involved here that probably only the plaintiffs in this lawsuit could address."

Jackson says Democrats deliberately sent the voters to the wrong polls in order to force the suit.
