Springfield, Ill – Fines for speeding in highway work zones are nearly double in Illinois.
Governor Rod Blagojevich signed a bill increasing the fine to $375, and $1,000 dollars for a second offense.
The current penalty starts at $200. But Blagojevich says 46 people died last year in construction zones, including seven workers.
Motorists caught speeding in work zones twice within two years can lose their licenses for 90 days.
The fines include surcharges of as much as $250 for paying off-duty state troopers to monitor work zones.
Blagojevich signed another bill that allows police to take pictures of motorists in work zones to nab speeders.
