By Matt Sepic, KWMU

St. Louis – KWMU's Matt Sepic reports for NPR's All Things Considered on the plight of Hartford, Illinois.

The contamination has led to bad smells, fires and even a few explosions.

Government and industry officials say they're doing something about it -- but some residents say nothing can be done, and they want those responsible to buy them out.
