St. Louis Red Cross Wants To Expand Capabilities

By Kevin Lavery, KWMU

St. Louis, MO – The St. Louis Red Cross chapter is trying to move from a Level II disaster agency - meaning it can sustain 50 families for 24 hours unassisted - to a Level III.

That would allow it to handle up to 400 families for 72 hours before federal help arrives.

Chapter board chairman Louis Maull says that will take another 100 certified volunteers -- and private financial support.

"We're going to be able to add the volunteers and the capacity as needed, and I think we can self-generate that," Maull said. "But where we're going to need partnerships with corporations is to help come up with the money when the actual need arises."

The Red Cross will host a preparedness seminar on September 18.
