Springfield, Ill. – Once again, the Illinois secretary of state's office has reached a tentative contract agreement with its major union.
Secretary Jesse White and Service Employees International announced the deal Friday.
This is their second contract deal. The first one fell through after White analyzed its impact and found that he could not afford it without laying off workers.
The two sides went back to the bargaining table Thursday and reached a new deal Friday afternoon.
A union spokeswoman says the new version is even better than the first. She says it includes a written guarantee that there will be no layoffs this fiscal year. Union members will vote on the proposed contract late this month or early next month.
