MODOT Still Repairing Poplar Street Bridge

By Bill Raack, KWMU

St. Louis – Transportation officials say they are still working on the Poplar Street Bridge deck and westbound I-64 traffic into Missouri will continue to be affected.

A crack was discovered on one of the floor beams Tuesday, causing workers to close the far right lane.

That has tied up traffic and created long delays. But Missouri Department of Transportation spokesman Chris Sutton is asking motorists to be patient, reminding them of a similar incident in 1998 when a truck hit the bridge.

"We had to do something similar in order to stabilize the bridge," Sutton said. "It took three days for us to get those structures into place and open traffic back up and those were actually much smaller structures than what we're using here at this location."

Sutton says MODOT does not know when the westbound lane will be reopened.
