Springfield, Ill – The unarmed security guard who was shot at the state Capitol today has died.
Chief Deputy Director of the Secretary of State's office Larry Schmidt says the man was shot around this afternoon and later died.
Randy Nehrt, a spokesman for the Secretary of State's Office, says the shooter entered the north entrance and shot the security guard around 1:45 p.m.
The Secretary of State's Office has law enforcement jurisdiction over the building.
Governor Rod Blagojevich was not in the Capitol at the time, and the Legislature is not in session.
Springfield police say they are also investigating another shooting earlier today at a military surplus store about two miles from the Capitol involving a man who matched the description of the Capitol shooter.
