East St. Louis, Ill. – A retired East St. Louis police officer was hit by a car and dragged to his death on Sunday.
Police say retired sergeant John Thurman was confronting a man who might have just stolen some kitchen cabinets. Officers say Thurman and a friend noticed the cabinets being dragged past Thurman's barber shop.
As Thurman approached the man with the cabinets, a truck crossed the road's center line, hit Thurman, and dragged him for about a block. Police are still looking for the driver; they later confirmed that the cabinets had been stolen from nearby building sites.
Thurman was rushed to the hospital and immediately taken to surgery, but died as a result of his injuries.
