Cardinals Win Game 1 vs. Astros

St. Louis, MO – The Cardinals beat the Astros Wednesday night 10-7 to take a 1-0 lead in their best-of-seven playoff series.

The Redbirds scored six times in the sixth inning. Jim Edmonds capped that inning with a three-run double.

The Astros took a 4-2 lead with Jeff Kent's two-run homer in the fourth, but the Cards scored eight unanswered runs against Brandon Backe and relievers Chad Qualls and Chad Harville.

The Redbirds tied the game in the fifth on Larry Walker's RBI double and a run-scoring single by Scott Rolen.

The game started with Houston and St. Louis trading two-run homers in the first inning (Albert Pujols hit the Cardinals' homer).

Woody Williams got the win. He pitched six innings and gave up four runs and four hits and struck out five.

Game two is Thursday night at 7. Matt Morris will start for the Cardinals.
