Further Expansion of MetroLink Delayed

By Kevin Lavery, KWMU

St. Louis – Regional transportation planners voted Wednesday to delay action on a proposed extension to the Metrolink light rail system.

The East-West Gateway Council of Governments has been studying the feasibility of several routes south of the city of Shrewsbury.

But the council decided to wait on the plans because the region does not have a funding source.

Webster Groves mayor Gerry Welch says many people in south and west St. Louis County want the council to take its time to study the issue.

"I think if we step back and we do some planning and we think about regionally where we're going with Metrolink, you'll build the support of the citizens," Welch said.

The council is now writing a draft environmental impact statement for the proposal. A formal public hearing will be held in early 2005.
