Washington – U.S. Attorney General John Ashcroft may be stepping down from his job.

A spokesman for the former Missouri governor says Ashcroft hasn't officially told his staff of his plans.

But Ashcroft is said to be exhausted from leading the Justice Department in fighting the domestic war on terrorism since the 9/11 attacks.

President Bush said Thursday he hasn't made any decisions about his Cabinet.

Aides say Ashcroft is likely to resign before Bush is sworn in for a second term on January 20th. But they say Ashcroft might stay on, at least for a short time, if the president asks him to.
