MODOT to Spend $400 Million on Road Improvements

By Catherine Welch, KBIA

Jefferson City, Mo. – The head of the Missouri Department of Transportation Wednesday explained how officials plan to spend the new money voters have set aside for roads.

Pete Rahn says the first part the Smooth Roads Initiative will use Amendment 3 funds to repave heavily traveled routes.

"Put bluntly that means if we focus our attention on 2,210 miles, we can improve the ride and the experience that 60 percent of the drivers are experiencing today," Rahn said.

The roads targeted for improvement are interstates, including all the highways in the St. Louis area.

This first phase of the three-part plan will cost $400 million.

That's being financed by Amendment 3-backed bonds.
