Durbin Elected Democratic Whip

By Bill Raack, KWMU

St. Louis – U.S. Senator Dick Durbin of Illinois is set to become the Democratic Party's new whip.

Durbin won his colleagues' approval Tuesday.

He says the role will help him raise Illinois' profile in negotiations on spending bills and other legislation.

"We're down three and we're in a tougher situation when it comes to some of the procedural possibilities in the Senate," Durbin said. "But this is a unified caucus."

Durbin says he looks forward to working with members of both parties on national security and other quality of life issues for Americans.

Durbin is the fifth Illinois senator to serve as a Senate leader.
