St. Louis –

The tragedy of September 11, 2001 and the spate of anthrax attacks that soon followed jarred emergency personnel across the country into a renewed sense of focus.

The events underscored the need to integrate first responders and government officials into a tightly coordinated team. This week, about 120 civic leaders and rescue workers in St. Louis did exactly that in a drill simulating a terrorist attack.

The event was co-sponsored by the St. Louis Area Regional Response System and the Heartland Center for Public Health Preparedness at St. Louis University.

KWMU's Kevin Lavery reports.
